05.02.10 Do it
again with Sting In order to conquer
his midlife crisis, the committed pop journalist Geoff Edgers decides to
pursue his dream: to bring back together the British band The Kinks, who had
major hits in the 1960s with Lola and You Really Got Me. With performances
by Sting, Paul Weller and Peter Buck.
Egos and quarrels
between Ray Davies and the other band members, including his younger brother
Dave, finally put an end to the band.
Edgers invested countless phone calls and hundreds of e-mails before he realised
that it was all rather more complex than he first thought in his boundless
enthusiasm. It looks like it'll be a mission impossible. Edgers talks to and
makes music with Sting, the actress and singer Zooey Deschanel, REM’s Peter
Buck, Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchcock and former Kinks manager Clive Davis. With
beautiful archive footage and unique recordings of Ray Davies at a Kinks fan
day.
PROGRAMMER NOTES
I was born in the same year as The Kinks. Maybe that's the reason why I think
The Kinks deserve more attention.
The quest for Ray Davies, the leader of the band, and the desire to see The
Kinks on stage together after a 25-year break are what motivates the
writer-journalist Geoff Edgers, but he underestimated (for this film maybe?) the
'sibling rivalry' between Ray and and his three-year-younger brother Dave
Davies. The film Do It Again is both cruel and funny and the pace is that of an
exciting boys' book. The lyrics by Ray Davies - less well known is that Dave
also wrote some - have unfortunately been under illuminated and undervalued in
the low countries. It's time this changed. Bindervoet and Henkes: grab your
chance!
Finally a few lines from Celluloid Heroes - a suitable song for a film festival:
I wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show,
A fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes,
Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die.

first single on monday
I Blame Coco unveils her eagerly anticipated first single ‘Caesar’, released
on monday february 1st on Island Records.
It’s the opening glimpse of Coco’s effortlessly dazzling, enticing fresh
sound, with her hotly awaited forthcoming debut album set for an early
summer release. Written by Coco and produced by Klas Ahlund
(Robyn/Teddybears), ‘Caesar’ captures and flaunts every ounce of her
undeniable first-class star quality.
The track
showcases Coco’s unashamedly pop melodies, wrapped in an electro-punk
fusion. Addictive, scuzzy rhythms dovetail around her instantly distinctive
and unique vocal, which oozes a maturity that belies her youth.
Whilst Klas was working with Robyn on her next record he played her a
snippet of ‘Caesar’. Robyn was instantly captivated by the demo and felt
passionate about adding vocals to the track. Her dynamic voice complements
Coco’s graceful delivery during the chorus sublimely.

26.01.10 Sting
at Everglades Fundation benefit
Sting, will be the
musical guest at the Everglades Foundation's Fifth Annual ForEverglades
Benefit on Friday, February 12, at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla. Tennis
superstar John McEnroe will serve as master of ceremonies for this year's
star-studded benefit, which will include cocktails, dinner and a live
auction.
Jack Nicklaus will serve as Honorary Chair. Cindi and Nick Bollettieri,
Sonia and Paul Tudor Jones II, Elaine and Ken Langone, Polly and David Ober
and Lia Reed serve as event co-chairs.
"Advocates of Everglades restoration understand how important it is to
sustain the momentum we experienced over the last year," said Kirk Fordham,
CEO, Everglades Foundation. "How can we top this year's benefit? We can
convince those who love this environment to come and enjoy great
entertainment in support of a cause that has generated significant success
over the last year with key Everglades restoration projects breaking ground.
We now have a showcase event that really raises the bar in support of the
science, advocacy and outreach needed to save America's Everglades. The
annual ForEverglades Benefit brings together supporters from all across the
country who understand the importance of restoring this one-of-a-kind
ecosystem. It has become one of the hottest tickets of the season."
Sting rose to universal acclaim as the lead singer and bassist for the rock
band The Police in the late 1970s and early 1980s, scoring several No. 1
hits, including 'Roxanne', 'Every Breath You Take', and 'Message in a
Bottle'. The group earned five Grammy Awards, two Brits and an induction
into the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sting's successful solo career
produced an additional 11 Grammys; two Brits; a Golden Globe; an Emmy; three
Oscar nominations; Billboard Magazine's Century Award; and MusiCares 2004
Person of the Year. His latest album, 'If On a Winter's Night...' features a
collection of carols, lullabies and hymns spanning five centuries and was
released in October 2009 on Deutsche Grammaphon.
A committed global activist, Sting's support for human rights organizations
including Amnesty International and Live Aid, mirrors his art in its
universal outreach. He founded the Rainforest Foundation in 1989 with his
wife, Trudie Styler, to support protection of the world's rain forests.
John McEnroe has won seven Grand Slam tennis singles titles, nine Grand Slam
men's doubles titles, one Grand Slam mixed-doubles title and was inducted
into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999. After a 12-year absence
from the professional tour, McEnroe returned to top-level doubles
competition in 2006 and became the oldest male player to win an ATP title in
30 years when he won the SAP Open at San Jose. As well as being a
distinguished athlete, McEnroe's commitment to and passion for the
environment and conservation has been unwavering, evidenced by his tenure as
a Riverkeeper board member.
The Everglades Foundation Benefit has attracted many prominent supporters
since its inception. Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine performed
last year, and South Florida writer and journalist Carl Hiaasen was honored.
Past ForEverglades performers and attendees have included Jimmy Buffett;
Thalia and Tommy Mottola; Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross; Daryl Hall and
John Oates; Diana Ross; John Mellencamp; Chris Evert; Christine and Steve
Schwarzman; Audrey and Martin Gruss; and Lydia and Robert Forbes.
"This has been an extremely positive year for America's Everglades
restoration," added Fordham. "A string of key projects are breaking ground,
renewing hope for the millions of Floridians who enjoy the recreational
opportunities and economic benefits of the Everglades."
Individual event tickets are available from $1,000 and include preferred
seating and donor recognition in the event program. Table sponsorships are
from $10,000 to $100,000. The Foundation's board funds all of the
organization's fundraising and administrative expenses - ensuring that 100
percent of each donation goes directly to Everglades restoration science and
outreach programs.

23.01.10 Hope for Haiti Now
While earthquake relief in Haiti was the reason for and inspiration behind
"Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," there's no
question that it featured some amazing, one-of-a-kind musical performances.
The songs chosen by most of the artists had a thematic connection to the
occasion, and the soaring lyrics delivered by the likes of Bruce
Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and Justin Timberlake underlined the hope for the
country that's coming from around the world.
The songs'
unplugged, often gentle renditions underscored the seriousness of the
situation.
George Clooney helped organize the event, and his hope is that the songs
carry the event beyond the evening and into the following weeks, months and
years. "We're gonna have some amazing performances, and I think that's gonna
make it last a little longer than just a telethon," he said earlier this
week.
Indeed it will: iTunes customers can exclusively pre-order the "Hope for
Haiti Now" full-performance album ($7.99) and the full two-hour video
telecast ($1.99). Pre-orders will be delivered in the days following the
telethon. Individual audio performances will also be available for purchase
and download for 99 cents each in the days following the telethon. Apple,
the record labels and the artists will donate their share of the proceeds to
Haiti relief funds managed by "Hope for Haiti Now" charities, including the
Red Cross and Wyclef's Yele Haiti foundation. Performances will also be
available for purchase in the days following the event through Amazon's MP3
service and Rhapsody, through distribution provided by INgrooves.

15.01.10 Sting
in Telethon for Haiti ?
Actor George Clooney is planning to host a telethon to raise money for the
people of Haiti next Friday on all the MTV channels.
George told last night at a private reception for his movie “Up in the
Air” at the Monkey Bar - hosted by Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter and
Paramount’s Brad Grey.
Clooney is putting out the call today to all his
celebrity friends and performers to participate from both coasts on Friday,
January 22nd — and he’s gotten MTV’s Judy McGrath to agree to air the show
on MTV, VH-1, etc.
That may be one reason McGrath was a guest at last
night’s shindig.
Clooney, in a
celebratory mood over “Up in the Air,” has gotten producer Joel Gallen, the
guy who handled the famous 9-11 telethon on all the networks, to produce the
show. At last night’s party he started in by buttonholing Sting — who came
to the Monkey Bar with wife Trudie Styler — to participate. Sting merely
asked, “Where do I go?” and Clooney was off to the races.
Meanwhile George had more celebrating to do last night. It was his dad’s
birthday. George bought Nick — who came into the Monkey Bar late with
George’s mom, Nina — a signed first edition of Arthur Miller’s classic
“Death of A Salesman.” Just so the gift didn’t seem too ‘heavy,’ George gave
his dad a birthday card that he himself illustrated, wishing him a happy
90th. The picture George drew showed an old man on a cane. Nick was not
amused, but everyone got a big kick out of it.
And everyone — I mean, everyone — included Michael Douglas, keeping busy
while wife Catherine Zeta Jones was doing her nighttime performance of “A
little Night Music” on Broadway, plus “Up in the Air” director/writer Jason
Reitman, his own dad, Ivan Reitman and mom Genevieve, “Up in the Air”
co-star Anna Kendrick, Woody Harrelson (in a wide brimmed black hat), Liz
Smith, Bob and Lynne Balaban, Albert Maysles, Ronald Perelman, CAA’s Bryan
Lourd, Tovah Feldshuh, writer/director Paul Schrader, writer/director Paul
Haggis, famed book editor Jerry Howard, and a very tight-lipped Lorne
Michaels, who declined very nicely to say a word about the Conan/Jay
disaster. Lorraine Bracco, who’s got two pilots cooking for TV, had a
reunion with “Sopranos” creator David Chase. We need Dr. Melfi back on the
tube!
Spike Lee, who was busy chatting about his upcoming documentary sequel to
his “When the Levees Broke,” took Sting aside. “I love that song, Soul
Cake,” Lee said, emphasizing the first word. Sting laughed, changing the
emphasis. “It’s soul cake,” he said, “not that kind of Soul.” It turns out
Spike Lee is a big Sting fan. When he praised Sting’s first solo album,
“Dream of the Blue Turtles,” the singer told him he was going to re-release
the CD totally remixed. “It’s going to have a lot more punch.” For a while
Sting and Vanity Fair writer Christopher Hitchens also discussed God. But
that’s another whole story.
Meanwhile, Trudie Styler got very cozy with Maysles, and starting planning a
new documentary.
Around the room, there was plenty of talk about some other upcoming
Paramount films including Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island.” One exec told
me that the postponed film, now set for February release, would simply have
been too dark for a Christmas release. “Wait til you see Leonardo DiCaprio,”
I was warned. “It’s an Oscar performance.”
Paramount is also gearing up for “Iron Man 2,” “Transformers 3,” with Shia
LaBeouf and “Indiana Jones 5,” with Shia LaBeouf, not to mention a J.J.
Abrams sequel to “Star Trek.”
But wait — Ivan Reitman, who told this column about a potential
“Ghostbusters” film a few weeks ago, is amused by all the subsequent talk,
chatter, speculation and blogging. “It just grows and grows,” he laughed.
“And nothing new has happened.” Got that?

15.01.10 Sting to support global hearing
loss campaign
Grammy award winning singer songwriter Sting is to lend his support to the
Hear the World initiative, a global hearing loss campaign that helps raise
awareness about the importance of hearing and the consequences of hearing
loss.
Sting joins a
host of other celebrity ambassadors including Jude Law, Elle Macpherson,
Annie Lennox, Jerry Hall and Peter Gabriel. Each supporter has been
photographed by musician and photographer Bryan Adams holding the Hear the
World pose - with one hand cupped behind their ear to convey conscious
hearing.
Over 800 million people worldwide, more than 16 percent of the world's
population, have hearing loss and experts predict this will to increase to
1.1 billion by 2015. In the UK an estimated 8.5 million people have hearing
loss and struggle for up to 15 years before seeking advice. Studies have
shown that this has a significantly negative effect on a person's social,
emotional and physical wellbeing.
Hear the World, which was set up in 2006 by leading hearing systems
manufacturer Phonak, aims to call attention to the importance of taking care
of your hearing, to prevent hearing loss in later life, as well as the
social and emotional impact of hearing loss and the solutions available for
those who suffer.
"Our hearing is not only integral to how we communicate but also how we
experience the world around us." Sting commented "It's a fact that we gain
more information from hearing than seeing. I hope by supporting this
campaign people are reminded to appreciate every sound and fully protect
their sense of hearing".

29.12.09 Message
from Sting
"Dear Supporter,
I was shocked to hear reports that Iranian security forces arrested 29
mothers and their supporters who were silently mourning children killed in
post-election violence this summer.
These Mourning Mothers gather peacefully each week to call for an end to
widespread human rights abuses and justice for their dead children.
The disturbing news of their
arrest brought to mind profound memories of the Mothers of the Disappeared in
Chile and Argentina. Like the courageous mothers in Iran, the Mothers of the
Disappeared faced threats and harassment for seeking justice for their children
kidnapped during the Dirty Wars in Chile and Argentina.
My song "They Dance Alone" is dedicated to the Mothers of the Disappeared. I had
the honor of performing it with them in 1988 during Amnesty International's
Human Rights Now! Tour.
Dancing on stage with the Mothers of the Disappeared in Chile and Argentina was
one of the most moving moments of my career.
I am heartbroken to see that once again others have to face the anguish that the
Mothers of the Disappeared endured. I am compelled to speak out again. I hope
you will too.
What gives me hope is knowing that Amnesty International is fighting on behalf
of the Mourning Mothers and others threatened with abuse in Iran and around the
world.
As you read this, Amnesty International is investigating and reporting on the
human rights situation in Iran. It's publishing the names of prisoners of
conscience and documenting the use of brutal force to crush dissent -- even as
it continues to respond to human rights emergencies across the globe.
The people of Iran deserve to speak peacefully without fear. Show them they are
not alone. Donate to
Amnesty International today.
Sincerely,
Sting"
