14.05.13 Twenty
feet from Stardom
Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling
new film TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville
shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind
some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and
heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung
voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the
conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others.
These gifted artists span a range
of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating
and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along
with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM
boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger
and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a
backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take
center stage in the film. Feat. Jo Lawry and Lisa Fischer.

Human Rights Concerts - Highlights
Amnesty International and Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce
news of the release on 27 May 2013 of “GET UP! STAND UP! Highlights from The
Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998” on DVD and CD [Cat Nos EREDV981 and
EDGCD505 respectively]. The “Human Rights Concerts” is the collective title
of the series of concerts presented by the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human
rights organization Amnesty International in the years 1986-1998.
2013 is the
25th anniversary of the most high-profile of all the concerts in the series -
the “Human Rights Now!” world tour. A six-week, five-continent, fifteen-nation,
twenty-concert tour of the world in 1988 raising awareness of the cause -
headlined by Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman and Youssou
N'Dour. In celebration of this anniversary - and to raise funds for and
consciousness of, Amnesty - the films of all the "Human Rights Concerts" in the
series have been digitally restored and are to be released in 2013 in DVD, audio
and digital formats. “GET UP! STAND UP!” presents highlights from all the
concerts and serves to whet the appetite ahead of the full-scale release later
this year. Three of the four films have never been available in any format since
their one-time-only airings on TV - making the upcoming releases all the more
exciting.
The performances on “GET UP! STAND UP!” are drawn from four sets of shows. The
first in the series is the grand finale concert of “A Conspiracy Of Hope”,
Amnesty’s 25th anniversary concert tour of the USA in 1986. The second source is
the film of the above-referenced historic “Human Rights Now!” world tour
undertaken in 1988. The series continued with stand-alone concerts “An Embrace
Of Hope” in Chile in 1990 and “The Struggle Continues” in Paris in 1998. The
list of musicians who contributed their services is extraordinary and includes
some of the world’s foremost artists - drawn from several nations and
representing a wide range of musical styles. The primary factor uniting them was
their desire to donate their time and talents to place a spotlight on Amnesty’s
crucial work campaigning for people whose human rights are abused.
The release of “GET UP! STAND UP!” in the last week of May coincides with the
52nd anniversary of the creation of Amnesty International. Amnesty dates its
genesis to 28th May 1961. That was the date that the UK newspaper, The Observer,
published an advocacy article titled “Forgotten Prisoners” by British lawyer
Peter Benenson calling for an “amnesty” for political prisoners worldwide. What
was initially a one-year campaign mushroomed into a global movement named
Amnesty International that now has over 3 million members and supporters.
The "Human Rights Concerts" evolved out of a desire to capitalize and build on
the invaluable support for Amnesty in the music community, first manifested in
Amnesty’s legendary “Secret Policeman’s Ball” series of benefit shows, albums
and movies beginning in 1976, that had presented musical performances by Pete
Townshend, Sting, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Phil Collins, Tom Robinson, Donovan,
Midge Ure and Bob Geldof. Those entertainment events were a crucial turning
point in Amnesty’s strategy of inspiring young people to become active
participants in the human rights movement.
A key organizational figure in the first three events of the “Human Rights
Concerts” series was Jack Healey, Executive Director of Amnesty International
USA between 1981-1993. In the case of the 1986 US tour and 1988 world tour,
Healey co-produced with seasoned rock promoter Bill Graham. The 1998 Paris
concert was organized by Amnesty planning officer Blair Gibb and Peter Gabriel.
Executive Producers for Amnesty on this project are Amnesty International USA’s
Claire Schultz (Chief External Affairs Officer) and Stacey Bain (Chief Financial
and Administrative Officer/Acting Director).
The "Human Rights Concerts" have been restored and produced for release by
longtime Amnesty activist Martin Lewis - who was co-creator (with John Cleese)
of Amnesty's "Secret Policeman's Ball" series and co-producer of all the 'Ball'
shows, movies, TV specials and albums between 1976-1985. It was Lewis who first
instigated Amnesty's outreach to rock musicians by recruiting and producing the
above-referenced musicians.
The historic “Human Rights Concerts” brought awareness of the cause to an
ever-wider public. These new releases on DVD and CD are designed to continue
that mission and raise further funds for Amnesty’s ever-vital work. The
collected concert set – titled “¡RELEASED!” - will be issued in a DVD box-set in
October 2013 throughout the World (except North America) by Eagle Rock. There
are also plans to release corresponding audio CDs.

10.04.13 Sting
- We are family
Quite a night for Nancy Hunt and Nile Rodgers’ We Are Family Foundation:
they finally got to honor Sting and Trudie Styler for their work with the
Rainforest Foundation, postponed from last October 31st - remember that
date? It was Hurricane Sandy.
The reboot
turned into a wild night of fantastic music as Sting, "Soul Man" Sam Moore
fresh his White House PBS gig, and Nile Rodgers with Chic rocked the
Manhattan Ballroom for an invited audience. Styler first spoke so eloquently
about the work of both foundations. It was lovely.
Accepting the humanitarian award, Styler said: "We’re all born into this
world. Some are placed gently, others thrust into it, and still others
abandoned. But whatever the unequal circumstances of our birth, we share the
same basic human needs of survival: water, food, shelter, warmth. There is
another equally essential basic human if we are to survive, and that is
love. Mahatma Gandhi said Where there is love, there is life. Well perhaps
tonight we can change that tonight to say Where there is love, there is
family."
Sting and Trudie were introduced by Caryl Stern, CEO of the US Fund for
UNICEF.
Then came a torrent of great music. Moore performed his classics, "Soul Man"
and "When Something is Wrong with My Baby," pumping his fist and turning it
out at age 77. Sting took the stage and first sang "Englishman in New York,"
then acoustic heartbreaking "Fields of Gold." He invited Moore back onstage
to make an R&B duet of "Every Breath You Take" that made the crowd go nuts.
Then they took on Bill Withers’ hit "Just the Two of Us" sort of impromptu,
before Rodgers fired by Chic and a dance party began.
The ballroom was filled with plenty of people who’d just paid, and some
heavy hitters and celebs like Motown great Valerie Simpson, Denise Rich,
Broadway producer Jean Doumanian, long time record industry exec Michael
Ostin, Q Tip, philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, "Guiding Light" actor Grant
Aleksander, and the always amazing Rosie Perez. A white Gibson guitar signed
by Sting, Moore, Rodgers, and not comedian Russell Peters - who opened the
show with some real laughs - fetched $26,000 in a live auction.

Gives House To Sea Power Rock School Sting is to donate a Cumbrian retreat to Quietus
favourites British Sea Power to set up an education centre and rehearsal
space for young musicians. Sting, who owns a number of properties around the
world, is parting company with the 17th century High Score Crag cottage and
barn near Grasmere in order that BSP might set up "Cumbria's most
prestigious school of rock".
According to the band's
ever-eloquent spokesman, "Sting is said to be aware of BSP's north-eastern
parentage, so the combo of the Lakes and the 'greater geordie nation' really
appears to the cerebral superstar composer behind 'The Dream Of The Blue
Turtles' and 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da'.
"We were amazed when Sting approached our management." says BSP's
Cumbrian-born frontman Yan. "We couldn't believe he'd even heard of us, but
it seems he really is giving us this amazing house. It's worth... well, a
lot of money. He has some sheep there... Some people say Sting is a wanker,
but this proves he isn't."
The band add that they are "thrilled" with the rock generosity, and promise
to personally teach young Cumbrian bands – everything from basic chords and
record techniques to ideas on presentation, the latter underlined by the
statue of BSP stage bear Ursine Ultra that will sit by the entrance.
The rock school will host some impressive artefacts from Cumbrian rock
history. A Gibson Les Paul donated by Spooky Tooth and the tea-chest bass
that renowned Cumbrian Melvyn Bragg played in a skiffle band at Wigton
Grammar School. BSP are most excited by a possible loan of a unique
instrument, the Tap Board, created by Cumbrian hitmakers It Bites.
It Bites – from Egremont, close to the nuclear reactors at Sellafield on the
Cumbrian coast – had a number six hit in the UK singles charts, with
‘Calling all the Heroes’ in 1986. The Tap Board is a unique combination of
guitar and keyboard, partly constructed from an egg-timer and a shower hose.
"It Bites!" says BSP's Yan. "This is beyond our wildest dreams. Liverpool
may have The Beatles, but we have It Bites. It just feels like everything's
come full circle or something. To us this is like stepping onto the moon or
being given the crown jewels, amazing..."

Nile Rodgers , will honor Humanitarian Award recipients Sting and Tr udie
Styler at its inaugural We Are Family HONORS event on Thursday, April 11,
2013, at Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom in New York City.
Artists and activists Sting and Trudie Styler will receive the Humanitarian
Award, which honors those in the public eye who have made tremendous efforts
and inroads to improving the human condition throughout the world.
Previous recipients of the
Humanitarian Award include musical legends Jackson Browne, Peter Gabriel, Sir
Elton John, and television and radio host Larry King.
Sting and Trudie Styler are committed to helping make a difference for children
around the world and protecting the environment.
In 1989, the couple founded the Rainforest Fund, an organization devoted to
protecting rainforests and their indigenous peoples. To date they have raised
more than $30 million for the cause and have expanded to a network of
interconnected organizations in more than 20 countries.
Sting’s support for human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and
Live Aid mirrors his art in its universal outreach.
From raising funds and awareness for the UNICEF End Child Exploitation and
United Against AIDS campaigns to visiting tsunami-affected Sri Lanka in
solidarity
with those affected by the devastating disaster, Trudie Styler has been a
leading voice on behalf of some of the poorest and most vulnerable children on
earth.
“The We Are Family Foundation was born as a result of the 9/11 tragedy, after
which I asked the question, ‘Can we organize for peace half as effectively
as others do for hate?’”said Nile Rodgers, Founder & Chairman of the We Are
Family Foundation. “My song, ‘We Are Family’was the inspiration to bring people
together, celebrate our differences and share ideas across borders in order to
solve some of the bigger problems facing our world.
We are inspired by Sting and Trudie and their dedication to making the world a
better place.”
The funds raised will support WAFF’s mission and existing programs including
WAFF’s signature program, Three DotDash, which identifies, supports and mentors

and Kathryn Tickell Visit Newcastle Primary School Assembly Pupils at Hawthorn Primary School in Elswick,
Newcastle-upon-Tyne received a surprise visit from Sting today, joining
Kathryn Tickell.
Their visit was in support of the In Harmony project; a project delivered by
The Sage Gateshead at Hawthorn Primary School.
The project has enabled every
child in the school access to a musical instrument and music tutors on a daily
basis as part of a national programme that aims to inspire and transform the
lives of children in deprived communities within the UK, using the power and
disciplines of music-making.
Sting joined the pupils along with award-winning Northumbrian piper and
composer, Kathryn Tickell and singer Mike Tickell, to listen to the pupils play
instruments they have received since the project started.
Sting said: “I wish I’d gone to Hawthorn School, as I’d be a better musician
today. I’m delighted to be here to see the results of this excellent music
programme.”
Kathryn and her Dad, Mike, also performed in the school’s assembly and
demonstrated how the Northumbrian pipes worked and together with the children,
they sang traditional Geordie songs including ‘The Blaydon Races’.
Kathryn Tickell said: “It was great to be at Hawthorn School today. There is so
much energy and enthusiasm from the children and staff in the school. They
obviously love playing music and it’s amazing how far they’ve progressed in such
a short time. There are a few stars in the making there!
Funding for the In Harmony project came from Arts Council England and the
Department for Education. Within this grant, money was allocated to fund a
temporary basic portacabin to be built providing an extra learning room for the
project. Since then, Sting, along with playwright, Lee Hall, have together made
a significant further contribution to provide an even more inviting space for
the young people to learn in, one of which is a permanent structure using cedar
cladding that will give a lasting legacy for the pupils of Hawthorn Primary
School.
Judy Cowgill, Headteacher at Hawthorn Primary School said: “We were delighted to
have the chance to say thank you to Sting for his contribution to our music
cabin. We couldn’t manage without it and it has very quickly become the most
important room in the school. I hope he was as amazed as we are at the progress
the children have made in the last few months. They are on their way to becoming
real musicians.”
Wendy Smith, Head of Strategy and Enterprise at The Sage Gateshead added:
“Sting’s visit to Hawthorn Primary School today was a fantastic boost for the
children, families and staff. Everyone was delighted to have the opportunity to
thank Sting for his support for In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead. It was an
inspiring morning of North East music with performances from Kathryn Tickell and
her dad Mike Tickell as well as the newly formed Hawthorn School orchestral
ensembles.”
Based on the principles of Venezuela’s inspirational El Sistema, the In Harmony
project not only develops musical skills but also aims to improve children’s way
of life. Regular music lessons delivered in the school and nursery by musicians
from The Sage Gateshead and the Newcastle and Northumberland Music Education Hub
will help develop learning, self-confidence and self-esteem, social skills,
wellbeing and health.

at JamFest Dave Matthews Band, Sting among acts slated for
Big Dance concert on April 7
NCAA.com.
NCAA Corporate
Champion Capital One together with the NCAA and Turner Live Events on Thursday
announced the lineup for the 2013 NCAA Big Dance Concert Series in Atlanta, in
conjunction with the 2013 NCAA Men’s Final Four, which includes headliner Dave
Matthews Band, Sting and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. The bands will appear at
the Capital One Jam Fest on April 7, as part of the free, three-day music
festival produced by Turner Live Events and the NCAA, taking place at Centennial
Olympic Park on April 5-7. To access the latest performance announcements and
specific times for the Capital One Jam Fest, as well as AT&T Block Party and
Coke Zero Countdown lineups, visit
www.ncaa.com/final-four.
As the finale of the Big Dance Concert Series, the weekend will wrap with Dave
Matthews Band headlining the Capital One Jam Fest. Dave Matthews Band —
comprised of Carter Beauford (drums), Stefan Lessard (bass), Dave Matthews
(vocals, guitar) and Boyd Tinsley (violin) — has sold a collective 37 million
CDs and DVDs combined. Renowned for its live shows, the group ranked as the
biggest ticket seller worldwide of the past decade. With its latest album, Away
From The World, which entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1, Dave Matthews Band
became the first group in chart history to have six consecutive studio albums
debut atop the chart. For the latest on Dave Matthews Band tour dates and news,
check out
www.davematthewsband.com.
The Capital One Jam Fest also will present a special performance by Sting.
Composer, singer, author, actor, activist — Sting was born in Newcastle,
England, before moving to London in 1977 to form The Police with Stewart
Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five albums, earned six Grammy
awards, and in 2003 was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since
1985, Sting has released 13 solo albums, most recently the definitive box set
collection 25 Years and the compilation The Best of 25 Years. He has sold nearly
100 million albums from his combined work with the Police and as a solo artist,
also earning an additional 10 Grammy awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and three
Oscar nominations, appearing in more than 15 films and authoring two books,
including the New York Times best-selling memoir, Broken Music. This summer,
Sting will resume his critically acclaimed Back To Bass tour with performances
throughout North America and Europe. His support for human rights organizations
such as the Rainforest Fund, co-founded with his wife Trudie Styler in 1989,
mirrors his art in its universal outreach.
“Capital One is excited to bring two giant names in music to Atlanta during the
Final Four,” said Roger Ferguson, Managing Vice President, Advertising and
Sponsorships at Capital One. “Dave Matthews Band continues to produce chart
topping music and, with deep roots in the South, is sure to be a big crowd
pleaser in Atlanta. Sting is well-known around the world for his numerous hits
and his enduring influence on popular music. It doesn’t get any bigger than
this.”
Additional musical acts on April 7 include Vermont-based band Grace Potter & the
Nocturnals. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals’ self-made 2005 debut album, “Nothing
but the Water” revealed a musically sophisticated young band inspired by the
music of the late ‘60s/early ‘70s and fronted by a then 21-year-old dynamo whose
nuanced singing, organ playing and songwriting belied her age. The follow-up,
2007’s “This is Somewhere,” confirmed that the band had no interest in following
trends but was instead in pursuit of timeless expression as it forged its
identity. On 2010’s self-titled third album, “GPN,” toughened by a half decade
of the nonstop roadwork, flexed their rock ‘n’ roll muscles and confirmed that
they were in it for the long haul. Seven years after hitting the radar, the band
takes an exponential leap with the widescreen opus “The Lion The Beast The
Beat.”
The 2012 NCAA Big Dance Concert Series in New Orleans featured headliners Jimmy
Buffett, KISS and the Black Keys attracted more than 140,000 fans across the
three-day weekend. Past performers also have included Kenny Chesney, Kid Rock,
Kings of Leon, LL Cool J and Taylor Swift. The Big Dance Concert Series is an
activation extension of the NCAA’s corporate champions and partners marketing
program, which CBS and Turner Sports license and collaborate on as part of a
14-year multi-media agreement with the NCAA.
“The Big Dance Concert Series is one of the most popular fan events that takes
place during the Men’s Final Four weekend, and I want to take this opportunity
to thank our corporate champion Capital One for its support in bringing great
musical acts to the city,” said Mark Lewis, NCAA executive vice president for
championships and alliances. “The Big Dance is free to the public which enables
everyone the opportunity to enjoy the Final Four weekend excitement regardless
of whether or not they have a ticket for the games. We hope everyone has a great
time at Centennial Olympic Park and the entire weekend in Atlanta.”

16.02.13 Sting
goes full cannibal at Malibu karaoke jam
Here's why you don't let Sting do karaoke at your bar -- he's SO DAMN GOOD... he ruins it for everyone else... and to prove it, TMZ has video of his impromptu rendition of "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals this week in Malibu.
11.02.13 Sting's
tribute to Bob Marley A report on MTV.com
Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna Electrify With Grammy Tribute To Bob Marley
Marley's sons were also onstage for the performance, which closed out with
the reggae classic 'Could You Be Loved.'
By Tamar Anitai (@MTVBuzzworthy)
During the tribute to reggae legend Bob Marley at the 2013 Grammy Awards,
you may have heard echoes of Sting's former band the Police in Bruno Mars'
soul-soaked "Locked Out of Heaven" — the syncopated chirps and
the frenetic sonic echoes of Synchronicity are shamelessly (and addictively)
shot throughout the song. And Mars has even called himself out on the fact
that the explosive song owes its musical roots to the Police.
"I grew up listening to the Police. I grew up performing in bars,
singing Police songs," Bruno told MTV News in 2012. "I remember
performing a song like 'Roxanne,' and you play those first couple of chords,
and you hit that first note, and you watch the whole bar ignite."
Bruno went bigger than just blowing up a bar at the Grammys on Sunday night
(February 10). He lit up the entire Staples Center, diving head-first into
an electrifying version of "Locked Out of Heaven" during a retro
performance worthy of a "Soul Train" special.
The singer finally got the chance to shine some light onto the song's
indirect progenitor, Sting. The former Police man took the Grammy stage,
bass in hand, tux fitting like Justin Timberlake himself tailored it, for a
blown-out upgrade of Bruno's swelling anthem, made even more kinetic by
Bruno's Motown-inspired band in lockstep.
As quickly as Bruno's performance hit its euphoric peak — and had Grammy
attendees like Neil Patrick Harris, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman and a
euphoric Taylor Swift dancing in place — Bruno handed Sting the spotlight
he rightfully deserves as he slid seamlessly into the 1979 Police classic
"Walking on the Moon." Sting turned Bruno's Grammy performance
into a reggae-tinged throwback before passing the mic (in what felt like a
glorified gesture to rap ciphers) to Damien and Ziggy Marley, trumpeted by
an airhorn blast. The pair transformed Bruno's Grammy performance into a
tribute to their late father, Bob Marley.
But Bruno Mars, Sting and the Marley sons still had room up on the Grammy
stage for another Bob Marley fan. Marley devotee (check her Instagram)
Rihanna, fresh from her stunning solo perforamnce of "Stay," got
back to her island roots, joining the Grammy jam session by closing out the
performance with Bob Marley's seminal 1980 hit "Could You Be
Loved," from the Bob Marley and Wailers album Uprising, the last album
Marley released before his death in 1981.
It was a crocheted-hat tip to the late, great Bob Marley, and the type of
power jam mash-up medley of music's current and classic greats that could
only take place at a star-studded awards show like the Grammys.

08.01.13 An Afternoon with Stewart Copeland Composers Stewart Copeland, founding member of The Police, and Michael Gordon, cofounder of the Bang on the Can Festival, discuss their operas The Tell-Tale Heart and Van Gogh with Andreas Mitisek, artistic and general director of the Long Beach Opera. Members of the Long Beach Opera will perform excerpts from both works. Copeland, former drummer and founder of the rock band The Police, is the recipient of the Hollywood Film Festival's first Outstanding Music Award. Michael Gordon's music merges subtle rhythmic invention with incredible power embodying, in the words of The New Yorker's Alex Ross, "the fury of punk rock, the nervous brilliance of free jazz, and the intransigence of classical modernism."

04.12.12 A
review from Hog Kong in TimeOut magazine The man’s still got it. That is, that intangible
factor that separates regular musicians from living legends. Long ago, the
man born Gordon Sumner cemented his superstar status by amassing one hit
after another in a career that has spanned decades. And even after taking a
long sabbatical from his rock persona – choosing to pursue symphonic and
new-age projects in his time – at the HKCEC in his return to Hong Kong with
his Back to Bass tour, Sting showed that, after all this time, yes… he’s
still got it.
Pulling the expected double duty
of singer and bassist, he performed a host of his classic monstrous hits
permanently etched in our brains both from his early days with The Police and as
a solo artist. Backed by a five-piece band, including a rocking violinist, he
kicked off the night with If I Ever Lose my Faith in you and Every Little Thing
She Does is Magic, followed by an all-hit roster stuffed with tunes that have
stood the test of time. Peppered in were some ditties that may have been a bit
more unfamiliar to the captivated audience, but lacking the ability to sing
along verbatim didn't stop the crowd from swaying in their seats and hanging on
every word. Strong as ever were his vocals – something that hasn’t waned over
the years – which underpinned the entire stellar set and multiple encores.
Very few achieve the longevous musical career Sting has managed and, with his
command of the stage and perfect pitch, it is easy to understand why. So Sting,
your fans we'll be watching you. Every stage you grace, in every single place,
they’ll be watching you.

Hear the World calendar
The 2013 Hear the World calendar: a unique photo collection in aid of a good
cause
Stars support the Hear the World Foundation with a series of striking black
and white portraits.
Monica Bellucci, Harry Belafonte,
Sting, Georgia May Jagger: these are just a few of the many stars who have had
their photos taken for the 2013 Hear the World calendar. Pictured with one hand
behind the ear – the distinctive Hear the World pose synonymous with conscious
hearing – they help raise awareness of a much-neglected issue: the vital
importance of good hearing and the serious consequences of hearing loss. All
proceeds from the sale of the calendars will go to projects supported by the
charitable Hear the World Foundation, which runs a global campaign to help
people in need as a result of hearing loss. The calendar is now available to buy
in a limited edition from www.hear-the-world.com at a price of EUR 29.90/CHF
34.90 – the perfect holiday present for people who want to give an aesthetic
gift and help a good cause in the process.
The Hear the World Foundation is campaigning for a world where everyone has a
chance to experience good hearing. It focuses particularly on providing aid for
children with hearing loss, to enable them to develop at an appropriate rate for
their age. Since 2006, Hear the World has supported more than 45 projects across
five continents and has already given hundreds of people with hearing loss the
chance to enjoy a better quality of life.
Anyone can now get involved in the foundation’s mission by buying the 2013 Hear
the World calendar. This unique collection of striking photo portraits is both a
work of art and an appeal for support, with the monthly images of stars drawing
attention to the importance of good hearing. Among the notable personalities
pictured are Monica Bellucci, Harry Belafonte, Sting, Georgia May Jagger, Mini
Anden, Corinne Bailey Rae, Billy Idol, John Legend, Léa Seydoux, Mimi
Müller-Westernhagen and German singer “Der Graf” from the band Unheilig. All the
photographs are by Bryan Adams. All of the stars have volunteered their time to
be photographed for the cause.
Hearing loss – a neglected issue
Hearing loss is an issue that is still largely overlooked, even though the
figures convey a clear message: over 630 million people across the world are
affected by hearing loss, and around half of these cases could have been avoided
if preventive measures had been taken. Some 665,000 children are born with
significant hearing loss every year, with serious consequences: children whose
hearing loss goes untreated have difficulty learning to speak, which severely
restricts their chances of obtaining a school education and developing at an
age-appropriate rate – especially in developing countries.
The focus of the foundation’s work
The work of the Hear the World Foundation focuses on a number of key areas, such
as the provision of audiological care for children in need as a result of
hearing loss. Other areas in which the foundation is involved include prevention
and education, science and research, and providing training for hearing care
professionals and for parental self-help groups.
22.11.12 Sting
and The Roots on NBC
On November 2, NBC's star-studded Hurricane Sandy relief telethon taped
across the hall from us in studio 6A. You know, no big deal, just Bruce
Springsteen, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi and members of Aerosmith hanging out
and rehearsing songs.
Obviously Questlove seized the
moment and, moments before "Late Night" started taping, asked Sting if he'd join
the Roots for their daily warmup song, exclusively for the viewing pleasure of
our studio audience. He said yes, and now you too can have the pleasure of
watching this exclusive Police classic "Walking on the Moon". You don't need a
message in a bottle to know this is the jam.
20.11.12 Sting
to honor Vaclav Havel
Rock stars Bono, The Edge, Peter Gabriel, Sting and Yoko Ono Lennon have
covered the cost of a tapestry that will be unveiled next month to honor
Vaclav Havel at Prague's international airport, that has been renamed to
honor the late Czech president.
The airport says the tapestry, which has been designed by the Czech-born New
York-based artist Petr Sis, will be unveiled at a ceremony on Dec. 9.
The musicians donated a total of
1.5 million koruna ($76,000) to cover the project proposed by Bill Shipsey, the
founder of Art for Amnesty, a project of artists supporting the Amnesty
International.
Havel was the dissident playwright who led the 1989 revolution that toppled four
decades of communist rule before becoming the country's president.

and Lee Hall to Support In Harmony North East Playwright Lee Hall and musician Sting have provided extra funding towards the In Harmony NewcastleGateshead project that aims to inspire and transform the lives of children in deprived communities, using the power and disciplines of orchestral music-making.
The Sage Gateshead was chosen to lead the three year regional project working with Hawthorn Primary School in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Based on the principles of
Venezuela’s inspirational* El Sistema* – which produced the world famous Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra – the project will give every child in the school access to a musical instrument and music tutors on a daily basis. In order to deliver the sessions regularly, the school requires extra space to be able to house rehearsals and workshops.
Funding for In Harmony has come from Arts Council England and the Department for Education. Within this grant, money was allocated to fund a temporary basic portacabin to be built to be able to provide this extra learning room. Since then, Lee Hall and Sting have made a significant further contribution to provide an even more inviting environment for the young people to learn in, one of which is a permanent structure using cedar cladding that will give a lasting legacy for the pupils of Hawthorn Primary School.
Lee Hall and Sting in a joint statement said: “We are delighted to be part of this excellent and exciting initiative. The El Sistema system has been inspiring and effective in many countries and we hope that Newcastle and the Elswick community as a whole will benefit from its introduction.”
Alison Clark-Jenkins, Regional Director, Arts Council England said: “I am thrilled that Lee Hall and Sting have made a contribution to The Sage Gateshead’s In Harmony project. These additional funds not only ensure there will be a lasting legacy of the project at Hawthorn Primary School, but the gesture solidifies the reputation of The Sage Gateshead as more than a music venue, but a force for good in cultural education in the North East.”
Wendy Smith, Head of Strategy & Enterprise at The Sage Gateshead said: “We are thrilled to gain this fantastic support from Lee Hall and Sting which gives the children of Hawthorn Primary School, Newcastle a beautiful space to learn music in, now and in the future”.
The new music cabin is to be opened in the week of the 5th November when the children will have the first opportunity to play the new instruments.

09.11.12 Andy's
new rock band As Andy Summers prepares himself for the premiere
of his movie "Can't stand losing you - Surviving the Police"
screening tonight in New Yorks Documentary festival, he revealed a great news
on Billboard and Rolling Stone magazines.
Andy is to release an new album and tour with a new rock band called Circa
Zero with Rob Giles.
You can read here the articles :
While Summers doesn't rule out a future
collaboration with his Police bandmates Sting and Stewart Copeland, he says it's
highly unlikely. As it is, he's busy with other projects, having just returned from
touring Brazil with the singer Fernanda Takai, with whom he wrote and recorded the
album Fundamental. Summers also has a new band with Rob Giles of the Los Angeles
rock group the Rescues. Calling themselves Circa Zero, Summers says the pair has
written and recorded enough songs for an album.
"The whole world is different in terms of releasing records, so I think we'll
start off with a single and see what kind of action we get off it," says Summers,
who describes the music as strong rock-pop. "I'm really quite excited about it."
(from: Rolling
Stone)
Summers has certainly been getting on with his musical life during the past year.
He released an album, "Fundamental," with Brazilian singer Fernanda Takai and recently
toured that country with her. And Summers is getting ready to launch a new rock band,
Circa Zero, he's formed in Los Angeles with singer Rob Giles; the group's debut
album should come out in early 2013, with a tour to follow.
"We definitely want to go out and play," Summers says. "The songs are great,
very strong pop/rock, lyrical. Rob has a killer voice. So it's been fun. I'm looking
forward to having a go with it."
(from: Billboard)
"For the past year I’ve
been working on a rock album with a really great singer, drummer, and rock bass
player I met here in LA named Rob Giles. We’ve got a new band, called Circa Zero.
We’re going to release the first track from our first album right after Christmas.
It’s all about the songs, which are very strong. Our sound is guitar-driven
and melodic, and edgy, but neither heavy metal nor soft rock. I’d say it’s
in the vein of The Police or U2."
(from: PopDose)
NB the first single is called "Say Goodnight" and could be release after
Christmas.

Hosted by "Today" show's Matt Lauer, the commercial-free affair included heartfelt performances from East Coast natives Christina Aguilera, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Mary J Blige and Jon Bon Jovi (who rushed home from London to be there).
Aguilera opened the telethon with a moving rendition of her hit "Beautiful," which was followed by the first of several packages of news footage that summarized the brunt of Sandy's wrath.
One of New Jersey's most famous sons, Bon Jovi was shown paying a visit to a flooded neighborhood in his home state, where he offered words of support and hugs to the residents. The footage provided an intro to his live performance, an acoustic mash-up of his hits "Who Says You Can't Go Home" and "Living on a Prayer." Billy Joel then took the stage with his almost chillingly relevant song from 1976, "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)."
The performances were interspersed with appearances by a slew of New York's most famous faces, including Tina Fey, Danny DeVito, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Bacon and Jimmy Fallon, who provided a charming moment of levity with an all-star rendition of "Under the Boardwalk" with Steven Tyler, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.
"Jimmy Fallon is a bold man to take lead vocals from Steven Tyler, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen," funnyman Stewart joked following the sing-along, before providing his own sincere request for people to come together and help those in need.
Tyler was later joined by his Aerosmith bandmates Joe Perry and Brad Whitford for "Dream On," followed by an acoustic version of "Message in a Bottle" by Sting.
Bronx-born Mary J. Blige offered a few heartfelt words of encouragement to the hurricane victims in addition to her moving performance of "The Living Proof." "My prayers go out to everyone affected by the hurricane," she said. "Hang in there, be strong and have faith."
The evening was brought to a fitting conclusion with a few back-and-forth quips from self-proclaimed "Jersey boys" Brian Williams and Stewart, who reminisced about traveling on specific areas of the Jersey turnpike before turning things over to New Jersey's most famous and celebrated song man, Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band, who brought it all home with "Land of Hope and Dreams."
To make a donation, visit RedCross.org, call (800) RED-CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 contribution to the cause.

Nations day In 1945, representatives from 50 nations met in San Francisco to draw up the charter for the United Nations. On this day, October 24, 1945, the United Nations
official charter was ratified, the United Nations was born. Since that time, we have been celebrating United Nations Day, every year on October 24. We celebrate the efforts and people and nations worldwide who continue to work together to overcome differences, attempt to settle disputes peacefully, and support efforts for world peace, tolerance, and better understanding and communication. Yesterday, the United Nations was hosting an online, live webcast from their headquarters in New York City.

Last night (Oct. 22) in New York: Billy Joel gave a private master class for Universal Music Publishing execs, a few select record industry folks, and Sting. Jimmy Webb was the moderator at the new Cutting Room on East 32nd St. and Park. Long time friend Sting (they each lived in the same apartment on Central Park West at different times), actress Lorraine Bracco, Revlon’s Ronald Perelman and his wife Anna were among the guests from the non-exec side as Billy played some hits, talked about pop music and dissected Webb. Billy signed a deal in August for Universal’s Rondor Music– run by the esteemed Lance Freed–to be administrator of his huge catalog.
Joel and Universal will do a similar event in Los Angeles coming up…
Paul Rudd hosted a bowling event at Lucky Strike lanes last night for Our Time with lots of well known friends including Amy Ryan, Matt Dillon, “Once” star Steve Kazee, Noah Emmerich, Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann, Eve Plumb from “The Brady Bunch”–who’s looking for an apartment in New York, Daphne Rubin Vega, Everett Bradley — who plays in the E Street Band, Jack McBrayer from “30 Rock,” Fisher Stevens, David Alan Basche and Alyssa Reiner. 26.10.12 Swansong - Synchronicity by the Police A new series in which each week Stuart Maconie examines the final album by a major artist. This week, Synchronicity by The Police. Released in 1983, it was the band's fifth album and it hit the number one spot on both sides of the Atlantic.
In America, it knocked the commercial juggernaut of Michael Jackson's Thriller from the top of the charts, selling over 8 million copies in the process. It also produced five international hit singles, including their most famous track Every Breath You Take. As Sting & co toured the world to promote their most successful release, each night playing 60,000 seater venues, at that point in their career they could genuinely lay claim to being the biggest band on planet Earth.
Although the split was never officially announced, Synchronicity was to be the last studio album they would ever record. Despite all of the success, the truth was the three members couldn't stand to be in the same room as each other. With archive interviews from Sting and Andy Summers and brand new contributions from Stewart Copeland, manager Miles Copeland, producer Hugh Padgham and journalist John Pidgeon, Stuart Maconie examines what went wrong.

17.10.12 Sting calls off Philippine gig in pine-tree row AFP - Rock superstar Sting has called off a one-night show in the Philippines in protest at the removal of pine trees outside a shopping mall undergoing redevelopment, the concert venue's owners said Friday.
The concert promoters relayed Sting's decision to the Mall of Asia Arena, which was to have hosted the December 9 "Back to Bass Tour" event, Arena general manager Arnel Gonzales said.
Sting did not wish to perform at Arena, owned by the country's largest shopping mall chain, after learning that pine trees growing outside one of its provincial malls were being removed for an expansion programme, Gonzales added.
"Somebody misled the Englishman In New York over the venue," Gonzales told AFP, referring to one of the British-born star's hit songs.
Environmentalists had sued the owners of the SM Baguio shopping mall earlier this year to stop the uprooting and relocation of 182 old trees, mostly pines, growing at its property that had been set for redevelopment.
The case sparked calls for a boycott of the SM chain, controlled by the family of the country's richest man, billionaire developer Henry Sy.
The mall chain said it had secured permits to remove the trees, but the transfer of all 182 trees to a government lot had not been completed due to the civil suit, which remains on trial.
Gonzales said that while Arena and SM Baguio were sister companies, the concert venue had nothing to do with the trees' transfer.
"It's something that we did not expect," he said of the concert cancellation.
Sting, former frontman of "The Police", is known for his activism on a number of social and political issues and is closely associated with the human rights monitor Amnesty International.
The concert promoters are still negotiating to save the show by holding it at another Manila venue, Gonzales said.
Officials of Ovation Productions, the local promoters of Sting's Manila concert, could not be reached for comment late Friday.
Arena would refund those who had bought tickets to the show, Gonzales said. Choice seats cost up to 15,840 pesos ($380).
The show has been moved to Araneta Coliseum
18.10.12 An englishman in Chianti Sting and Trudie make the cover of the #14 issue of Fine Magazine.
Having lost his heart to Italy, Sting had resigned himself to the fact that his family was unable to find a suitable home in the country. They had gone on one fruitless exploration after another and there seemed to be no hope. Then Trudie Styler told her husband of a new house up for sale close to the medieval town of Figline Valdarno in Tuscany. To their amazement, Trudie and Sting walked along a cypress-lined avenue right up to the saffron-yellow house of their dreams.
They found a home for their family and obtained a farm into the bargain. Its main produce is packed into tens of thousands of bottles each year.
Film producer, actress Trudie Styler and her husband, world-renowned musician Sting, have been producing organic red wine in the Chianti wine region of Tuscany, Italy, since 2007. They are always looking to improve the quality of their wines.

14.10.12 Dreamscapes To be screened on october 18 in Williamstown film
festival !
The Berkshire based, internationally renowned, landscape with text artist, Stephen Hannock, is the subject of a documentary film Dreamscapes by Wolfram Hissen.
The filmmaker is known for a long association with the project/ installation artists Christo and his late wife Jeanne Claude.
Using cost effective video equipment Hissen shadowed Hannock at work in the studio, at home with his daughter Georgia, during an opening at New York’s Marlborough Gallery, and on the road in Newcastle, England unveiling a portrait of the city commissioned as a gift by its native son, the musician Sting.
The short documentary also focuses on his unique commissions for the upscale, New York restaurants of entrepreneur, Danny Meyer, and his associate, Tom Colicchio, who created the TV show Top Chef and is its primary judge.
A sold out screening of the film will be shown at Images Cinema during the fourteenth annual Williamstown Film Festival on Thursday, October 18. It will be followed by a tasting party of Coliccio’s food, and a discussion between the artist and chef, at the restaurant Mezze.
In a warren of studio spaces we caught up with Hannock to discuss the film as well as current projects. Last year he showed four, epic scaled paintings earmarked for major museums, at the prestigious Marlborough Gallery. For the first time in decades he is not scheduled for an exhibition this year. He is seizing the opportunity, during spring, to tour for three weeks with his buddy, Sting, who will perform gigs in India.
Recently, he closed the New York studio and is now based full time in the Berkshires. He has a regular schedule in the studio often taking years to develop and complete paintings. While traveling frequently, including an annual “retreat” at Sting’s Italian villa, this also allows for location studies that result in paintings. He has an “idea” for Istanbul.

05.10.12 Children's
Health Fund benefit concert Thursday was the kind of classic night New York night you only get when the stars line up just right.
At the Cort Theater, Paul Rudd and Michael Shannon, with Kate Arrington and the great veteran actor Ed Asner opened in a new play called “Grace.” The theater was literally jammed, with plenty of stars who were friends of the stars. Among them Carla Gugino, and Steven van Zandt with beautiful wife Maureen. The performances in “Grace” are all A plus, but Michael Shannon is the standout this time. And Ed Asner remains a treasure.
Then: quick, uptown to the Beacon Theater for Jerry Seinfeld’s kick off show of his fall tour. Colin Quinn did ten minutes of opening act, very funny, of course, riffing on New York subjects. Then Jerry, The Master: standing ovation. His 90 minute or so show is brilliant, topical, fresh. Years ago Jerry said getting married and having kids wouldn’t become his material. Of course, it has–I do think he’s found his groove there marrying his observational humor with the pace and gentility of the late Alan King. When he gets to that area of the night, it’s a mature Jerry you could never have imagined from the old days.
This is still a PG rated show, too. No cursing, nothing coarse, totally sophisticated, hilarious. The writing and delivery are sharper than ever.
But I prefer the riffs on cell phones, modern communications, language. His opening bit about the audience getting ready for the show is terrific. Jerry mixes in some old routines–star 69, etc–and it all works. The amazing thing is you don’t get tired of hearing the greatest hits. Seinfeld is more fluid than ever on stage, more relaxed, completely at home. Why is he there? He has no place else to be, he jokes. He wants to be out. You think it’s a show about nothing but it’s about everything, deftly woven together. There needs to be a real recording of this show. It’s like medicine. Are there still comedy albums? Wherever Jerry is, don’t miss him.
And back to Radio City for Paul Simon‘s Children’s Heath Initiative 25th anniversary fundraiser. Star studded? Some couples performed together–Sting and Trudie Styler--she was very very cute and sexy in her singing debut–performed after making a pit stop at Tony Bennett’s fundraiser for his Exploring the Arts. Rita Wilson sang and let Tom Hanks accompany her. James Taylor performed with his wife, Caroline. Stevie Wonder pretty much stole the night singing three numbers with daughter Aisha Morris. They also did “Loves Me Like a Rock” with Paul Simon.
It was literally a night of 100 stars: Vince Gill, Amy Grant and their kids; Steve Martin on banjo; Ann & Nancy Wilson; PAul Simon with talented daughter Lulu (also daughter of Edie Brickell); Ruben Blades with wife Lulu Mason–who has an astonishing voice; lots of videos and presentations– Hillary Clinton, Spike Lee, Julianne Moore, Oprah, Tina Fey. Lorne Michaels was a guest. Aaron Neville sang with Sting and Allen Toussaint. What a night!
Now the weekend comes– Mary Wilson of the Supremes plays a show in Fairfield, Connecticut tonight at the Edgerton Center http://www.EdgertonCenter.org. Trudie Styler is off to be part of the Hamptons Film Festival jury. David Chase premiers his “Not Fade Away” at the New York Film Festival on Saturday and Hamptons Film Festival on Sunday. Steven Spielberg‘s “Lincoln” is the surprise screening Monday night at the New York Film Festival.

When we came back from France we received an email from Rob Mathes, the wellknown producer of CD Symphocities by Sting and his DVD Live in Berlin, with the question if Carel would have been available on the 10th of September for a CD recording with Sting.
Sting has written music for a theaterplay (working title) The last ship. This play is about the end of the shipping industrie in Newcastle, the city where Sting was brought up. There have been some read-aloud performances on Broadway and in London and now the record company gave its consent to record it on CD. Sting asked Rob Mathes to contact Carel for two songs. Carel will fly this weekend, after his concert in Dordrecht, to Southampton to rehearse and record in Sting’s private house."

20.08.12 New local book gets rock star approval!
Sting has recently been taking some nostalgic walks around Newcastle and Tyneside from the comfort of his home in Italy! This is thanks to a new book co-authored by one of his former teachers at St Cuthbert’s High School, Peter Donaghy.
Source : community.newcastle.co.uk
Peter, along with John Laidler, has just published ‘Discovering NewcastleGateshead’ which contains twenty-six walks around Tyneside, packed with detailed information about local people, places and events.
Image
The authors are giving a free talk about their book at Gosforth Library on Thursday 13 September at 2.30pm. To book a place phone 0191 2771400 or email information@newcastle.gov.uk.
Sting says, “This has provided me with a wonderful way to be reacquainted with the rich landscape and historical byways of my Tyneside home”. While he is full of praise for the efforts of the authors he couldn’t resist expressing his disappointment that “the great borough of Wallsend had been inexplicably excised from the authors’ selection” and suggested that it was probably worth a separate book of its own! However, the authors were quick to point out that Wallsend featured in two walks in their earlier book, ‘Metro Walks’, where they mentioned young Sting’s family home.
Peter and John, who have lived all their lives in Newcastle, say that now they are retired they have been able to examine the area much more closely and have discovered countless aspects which they hadn’t realised even existed.

29.08.12 Concours Rythm magazine In recognition of this month's cover star, we have a haul of incredible Stewart Copeland gear to give away.
You can win a Stewart Copeland Paiste Signature Blue Bell ride, a bale of the Police man's Vater sticks and a Tama Sound lab Project snare. This little lot is worth £1,000!
Copeland's 22" Paiste Blue Bell ride packs a beautifully dark sound with clear glassy ping. It also looks fantastic, with (as you can guess from the name) an attention-demanding blue band setting the metal apart from the rest of your set-up.
The Tama snare up for grabs, meanwhile, is the 14"x6.5" Black Brass drum. The snare features a gorgeous black nickel-plated finish with black nickel hardware. The 42-strand drum also ships with Starclassic lugs and a 1.5mm brass shell.
After bagging those two beauties you'll want something to hit them with, and we also have a set of 12 Vater Stewart Copeland Standard sticks on offer.

14.08.12 Rumble
Fish released as Blu-Ray The Guardian.co.uk released an interview of
Stewart Copeland yesterday about the releasing of Rumble Fish movie by
Francis Ford Coppola on august 27.
The soundtrack for this movie was composed by Stewart : the first on a long
list.
In Rumble Fish, there's a sense of time ticking down to a confrontation with
destiny. So a rhythmic soundtrack was important for Francis, which is why he
made the wild decision to choose me, a drummer in a rock band [the Police] –
a rhythmatist, as he called it – who'd never scored a film before.
I soon discovered what a fine way
to make music it was – composing for a 90-minute story, not a three-minute song.
A lot of it was about sounds rather than music – the clack-clack of billiard
balls, the blaring of horns, the tick-tock of clocks – but all with the rhythmic
quality Francis wanted. That recurring theme of clocks ticking was almost the
only time, in all the films I've worked on, that a collaboration happened as
planned. Most directors talk high-concept, but it's out of the window by the
first test screening.
Pretty much all the music came from guitars, bass and drums laid down by me in
my studio. That was the one culture clash between my rock background and the
world of film. They kept asking: "When's the scoring date?" Normally, that's
when the director and producers hear what you've written recorded by a full
orchestra. It's a very tense occasion, and expensive if you get it wrong.
I knew none of this. I'd been doing the music as I went along, like a painter
pulling colours off a palette. So my "scoring date" consisted of me in my studio
playing what I'd recorded to these flinty-eyed professionals. They were
dumbfounded – but overjoyed.

26.07.12 Sting
supports Pussy Riot The world-renowned musician Sting joins Amnesty
International in condemning the Russian authorities’ treatment of Pussy
Riot, a Russian punk rock protest band.
Last week, a court in Moscow ruled
that three members of the female punk group Pussy Riot must remain in pre-trial
custody for six more months after members of the group sang a protest song in
Moscow’s main Orthodox church in February.
Maria Alekhina, Ekaterina Samutsevich and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who are
accused of “hooliganism on the grounds of religious hatred,” face possible
prison sentences of up to seven years. Preliminary hearings in the case have
begun and the three have been ordered to remain in pre-trial custody until
January 2013.
Sting, who is currently on tour and set to perform in Moscow later today
(Wednesday 25 July) and in St. Petersburg on Friday (July 27), commented:
“It’s appalling that the musicians from Pussy Riot could face prison sentences
of up to seven years in jail. Dissent is a legitimate and essential right in any
democracy and modern politicians must accept this fact with tolerance. A sense
of proportion – and a sense of humor – is a sign of strength, not a sign of
weakness. Surely the Russian authorities will completely drop these spurious
charges and allow the women, these artists, to get back to their lives and to
their children.”
Amnesty International considers the three women to be prisoners of conscience,
detained solely for their peaceful expression of their beliefs, and is calling
on the Russian authorities to immediately release all three women.
23.07.12 Joe
: Synchronizing Crowdsourced Movies While touring with
his rock band Fiction Plane in 2010, bass player and vocalist Joe Sumner
woke up one morning to discover 450 videos on YouTube (GOOG) of the previous
night’s show in Lithuania. Uploaded by fans with mobile phones, the footage
was mostly grainy, shot from awkward angles, and had horrible sound. But it
gave Sumner an idea. “What if we could link all of these videos and make a
compelling movie?” he remembers thinking.
Vyclone, a
company Sumner founded two years ago with friend David King Lassman, attempts to
realize this vision. Its free program debuted in Apple’s (AAPL) App Store on
July 18 and lets two or more people in close proximity shoot video with their
iPhones, upload the clips, and view a movie automatically spliced together from
different angles. To recognize that multiple users are filming the same scene,
Vyclone tags each video with the location where it was shot using GPS. To
synchronize the clips, it lines them up by the date and time they were shot,
regardless of when they were uploaded. A simple-to-use video editor lets users
play director, toggling from one angle to the next with the tap of a finger.
Last year Sumner, 35, began showing off a prototype to music industry bigwigs.
“Within 50 seconds, I said, ‘We’re in,’” says Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, who
invested after a short demo. The pair later met with actor and tech investor
Ashton Kutcher, who impressed upon them that the opportunity was bigger than
live music. “Ashton said, ‘It’s a billion-dollar business,’” recalls Lassman,
47. “He said, ‘This is going to allow people to film life from every angle.’”
His show-business connections may have opened some doors: His dad is Gordon
Sumner, better known as Sting.
The startup is based in Los Angeles and London, and has 13 employees. Lassman is
chief executive; Sumner, chief creative officer. They’ve raised $2.7 million
from Oseary and Kutcher’s fund A-Grade, along with movie studio DreamWorks,
concert promoter Live Nation (LYV), and VC firm Thrive Capital.
Sumner and Lassman see Vyclone as a tool for citizen journalists, allowing them
to weave together a documentary of a live news event. Lassman hopes it will
become a killer app for home movies: “I can film the kid blowing out the candles
and I can have my buddy filming my wife, who’s sobbing, and I can have somebody
else filming grandpa and grandma with their arms around each other enjoying the
moment,” he says. “I get Vyclone to stitch that together in a multi-angle movie
that tells the full story of the moment.”
While the app is free, Vyclone may begin charging for extras, such as longer
movie times and higher resolution. Lassman says he’s been approached by record
labels and media companies about co-sponsoring concerts or other events where a
lot of people shoot video with their smartphones.
Sumner’s band is on hiatus while he builds his company. “This is much more fun,”
he says. “This is the new rock ’n’ roll.”

18.07.12 A&M
celebrates 50th birthday A&M Records Celebrates 50th Birthday With Release
Of 3-Cd Set - The Anniversary Collection Due Out August 28...
It's an archetypal story of the modern record business - two guys with a
dream running their nascent label out of a West Hollywood garage in the
summer of 1962. The label quickly gains momentum and eventually becomes one
of the most important record companies the world has ever seen.
The two guys were Herb Alpert and
Jerry Moss, the "A" and the "M" in A&M Records. By the way, it was Alpert's
garage and that first hit was "The Lonely Bull," performed by Herb Alpert & the
Tijuana Brass. And this year the two record men and UMe are celebrating the 50th
Anniversary of their label.
As part of the celebration, on August 28, UMe is releasing A&M 50: THE
ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION. A 60-track, 3-CD set curated by Alpert & Moss, THE
ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION perfectly illustrates what a potent effect the legendary
label is still having on contemporary popular music.
Perhaps because one of its founders was an artist himself - and a hugely
successful one at that - A&M Records distinguished itself as an artist-friendly
label, one that would stand behind artists they believed in, album after album,
until they found their voice and an audience.
"We wanted to make good records," says Herb Alpert, reflecting on the label's
genesis. "That was our goal. We felt if we made good records there would be an
audience."
Herb and Jerry's dedication to development resulted in some of the biggest
superstars in music ever: Joe Cocker, Procol Harum, Quincy Jones, Billy Preston,
Cat Stevens, Carpenters, Peter Frampton, Supertramp, Jeffrey Osborne, Styx,
Bryan Adams, Joe Jackson, the Police, Sting, Janet Jackson, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl
Crow, Soundgarden, and so many, many more.
As iconic as the music released over the last 50 years by A&M Records was, so
was the space that was home to the label for so many years: 1416 North La Brea,
the former Charlie Chaplin Studios in Hollywood, and now home to Henson Studios.
It's interesting to note that the state-of-the-art recording studio that Herb
and Jerry built on that lot decades ago is still drawing top artists from all
over the world to record there.
"People hung out there," says Moss. "You took a walk on that lot and you
wouldn't believe who you would run into. It was interesting to everyone who
worked there and it was a lot of fun."
At A&M Records, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were able to build a haven for
artistic development that rivals any record label in history. Maybe it's due, in
part, to the fact that A&M was privately owned and run by its founders for the
first 27 years of its existence. The environment they created helped spawn some
of the most important artists in contemporary music, selling millions of albums
worldwide in the process and creating a legacy that is virtually unmatched in
the United States. As Sting so succinctly puts it, "We definitely felt nourished
and sustained by a creative team."
And now, with the release of THE ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION, music fans everywhere
can sample the music of one of the greatest record labels of all time, all in
one convenient place.

Futbol-the world's first virtually-indestructible soccer ball that never needs a
pump and never goes flat, even when punctured. For every ball bought at retail,
the company donates a second ball to a community in need. The company also sells
the One World Futbol directly to institutions and organizations, and works with
schools, soccer teams, clubs and other organizations to help them raise funds
while generating donated soccer balls at the same time. The One World Futbol
Project is headquartered in Berkeley, California. To date, the One World Futbol
has reached more than 137 countries through at least 138 organizations, keeping
the spirit of play alive for an estimated 525,000 children and young people. For

announced for the tribute concert to Pavarotti
On September 6 will be held in Modena a tribute concert to Luciano
Pavarotti, exactly five years after the disappearance of the latter, which
occurred September 6, 2007.
This event, which will also
coincide with the 20th anniversary of the foundation "Pavarotti and Friends"
(created by the Master to help Bosnian children), will show performances of
artists including Frank Sinatra, Andrea Bocelli, Ennio Morricone, Sting and
Bono.
We remember that Bono had composed the song Miss Sarajevo at the request of
Luciano Pavarotti. In September 1995, He came to interpret this song as a duet
with Italian tenor on stage in Modena, along with The Edge and Brian Eno.
As part of the friendship that has bound him to Pavarotti to death of it, Bono
was back singing in Modena in 2003. On this occasion, he performed "One" solo
and "Ave Maria" as a duet with Pavarotti.

Sumner will play Patti Smith Sting's actress daughter Mickey Sumner has landed
the coveted role of punk icon Patti Smith in star-studded new movie Cbgb.
Sumner was added to the cast on Monday, alongside Foo Fighters rocker Taylor
Hawkins, who will make his acting debut as Iggy Pop in the film about late
New York club boss Hilly Kristal, portrayed by Alan Rickman.
The twosome joins Johnny Galecki and Steven Schub, who will play Terry Ork
and DeeDee Ramone in the film, and sexy Malin Akerman, who will play Blondie
star Debbie Harry.
Also among the cast: Evan Alex
Cole as Richard Hell, Avatar star Joel David Moore as Joey Ramone, Stana Katic
and Rupert Grint.
Filming will begin in Savannah, Georgia and New York City later this month.
Movie spokeswoman Nadine Jolson tells WENN, "The story will follow Kristal who
dreamed of having a Country, Bluegrass and Blues club in New York City. When he
had difficulty finding country and blues bands, he opened his doors to local
acts. He had one demand of the acts he booked: They could only play their own
original music.
"Living on a couch in the back of the club for the first two years, Hilly could
barely make ends meet. Nevertheless, Cbgb became such a well-respected haunt for
artists that many bands begged Hilly for a chance to play." »

22.05.12 The
US generation documentary ICON Television
Music, UNUSON Corporation and Plum Moving Media announce the making of the
definitive 1982 US Festival feature length documentary.
“This film is the only authorized and sanctioned documentary of the 1982 US
Festival”, according to Carlos Harvey, CFO, UNUSON. ”It captures the
cultural essence of the festival and tells the behind-the-scenes stories the
fans will appreciate.
I’ve had thousands of calls &
emails from attendees over the years about when we’ll release a film about the
US Festival. After 30 years it seems like the right time so the fans can relive
the experience and we can create new fans too”.
On a blistering hot Labor day weekend in 1982, legendary Apple co-founder, Steve
Wozniak’s vision played-out in the 110 degree California sun.
Over 375,000 people gathered at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernadino, for
three days of music and technology. The festival stage was built with the
largest sound system constructed at the time. Over 400,000 watts of sound power
combined with the first ever large scale video-trons used for live stage
performances. Technology exhibits in five air-conditioned tents displayed the
latest in cutting-edge computers, software, video games and electronic musical
devices.
“The US Festival was not a charity event”, stated Steve Wozniak, co-founder of
Apple and CEO of UNUSON. “It was a rock concert to bring music, technology and
people together. It was an event to unite government, industry, science and
education to improve the quality of life for everyone.”
Woz was keenly aware that computer technology was about to bring access to
information to the masses like never before. He wanted to present the computer
as a humanizing force in society. And so, the US Festival was a celebration, a
coming-out party for the technology and the US decade. In a way, the US Festival
was the birthplace of the first computer generation.
“The current boom in computer technology offers us one of the best ways to bring
people together. I don’t know where this will lead, but if we have communicated
the power of working together to the quarter million or so of you here at the
festival, and shown how effective future technology will be in helping us do
that, we feel that we will have been successful.” – Steve Wozniak, 1982
The documentary will feature legendary performances and interviews. The concert
headliners included:
* ~ B-52′s
* ~ Fleetwood Mac
* ~ Police
* ~ Ramones
* ~ Santana
* ~ Talking Heads
* ~ Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Exclusive interviews with Steve Wozniak and UNUSON President, Carlos Harvey
reveal how Woz’s vision and 57 acres of desert park was transformed into the
world’s largest outdoor amphitheater. With the enlistment of renowned concert
promoter, Bill Graham, the stage was set for a world-class 80’s cultural event.
Glenn Aveni, the films’ Director and President of ICON Television Music, Inc.
brings back to life incredible performances from the premier artists of the
decade. Original video footage and audio tapes will be re-mastered combined with
new interviews shot in high definition. The film chronicles the people, events
and history that lead to the creation of this iconic festival.

15.05.12 Many
news about the Sumner family Trudie Styler, Daughter Act up A Storm in Off
Broadway Workshop
You can catch one more performance tonight, Saturday, at 45 Bleecker Street
Theatre of Chekhov’s “The Seagull” as adapted by famed British director Max
Stafford-Clark. It’s really a master class that’s been going on as open
rehearsals for the last couple of weeks.
Last night,
and tonight, are the only set performances for now. Stafford Clark and
playwright Thomas Kilroy have revived a 30 year old adaptation of “The
Seagull” set in Ireland instead of Russia. It was acclaimed then and it
still works beautifully.
Last night, Alan Rickman–who’d been in the original production–was in the
audience, along with Sting, who came to see wife Trudie Styler and daughter
Mickey Sumner–a very hot, up and coming serious actress–play major roles.
(He brought Trudie roses, of course.) This production is done as a staged
reading, but it is never boring. On the contrary, the casting is so perfect,
and Stafford-Clark has waved a magic wand. Even in this early version,
theatre fanatics will be sorry to miss tonight’s show. It’s simply
mesmerizing. It’s not just Styler and Sumner, but a strong cast that
delivers without missing a beat.
Rickman was very pleased, and raved about Mickey Sumner. (She’s the real
thing.) Styler, a classically trained actress (among many other
multi-tasking successes) gives a textured and moving performance. Everyone
else is top notch, from Rufus Collins to Slate Holmgren, Stella Feehily, and
Katie Kirby.
PS Sting and Trudie became grandparents this week–Sting’s singer son, Joe
Sumner, from his first marriage to Frances Tomelty, welcomed a baby
daughter. His wife, Kate, gave birth to a beautiful daughter named Juliet.
The Sumner clan is headed west on Sunday to see the brand new baby and give
congrats to the parents.

Many many changes to come...
Many many work for me, as hundreds of pages have to be read and re-written.

15.04.12 A Police
movie in the making ? Accordong to
Side-Line.com webzine, there are plans to make a movie about The Police.
As it seems the plans are very early stage, but the webzine has been told
that a certain Marc Warren would already have been approached to feature in
the film as Sting.
Marc Warren (born 20 March 1967) is an English actor, known for his British
television roles as Danny Blue in "Hustle", Dougie Raymond in "The Vice",
Dominic Foy in "State of Play" and Rick in "Mad Dogs". As you can see on the
pics above Warren (on the right) has indeed a very close resemblance with
Sting, especially during the early years of The Police.
Well, let's wait for a confirmation.

on "The hunger Games" soundtrack Sting Performs
“Deep in the Meadow (Lullaby)” for “the Hunger Games”: Songs from District
12 and Beyond
Available as a Free Download Beginning Tuesday, March 27
LOS ANGELES, Mar 26, 2012
(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The chart-topping companion album to the LIONSGATE® film THE
HUNGER GAMES, "THE HUNGER GAMES": SONGS FROM DISTRICT 12 AND BEYOND, will unlock
a free download of "Deep in the Meadow (Lullaby)" performed by world-renowned
musician Sting beginning March 27, 2012. The track can also be purchased as a
single from major digital retailers.
Image
"Lullaby" remains a centerpiece of THE HUNGER GAMES. In the story, the
protagonist Katniss [Jennifer Lawrence] learns the song from her father who sang
it to her as a child. Passing down the tradition, Katniss sings it to her little
sister Primrose, as well as to fellow Tribute Rue, to calm their fears.
16-time Grammy Award winner Sting delivers a powerful and poetic rendition of
“Lullaby,” produced by acclaimed singer-songwriter and producer T-Bone Burnett.
The pair last collaborated on 2003’s “You Will Be My Ain’ True Love” for the
film, Cold Mountain. The song was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award, a
Grammy Award and a Golden Globe.
As one of the world’s most respected performers, Sting recently celebrated his
25th anniversary as a solo artist with the release of the definitive box set
collection 25 Years as well as The Best Of 25 Years. The free iPad app, STING
25, also serves as a commemoration of this milestone. He is currently on the
celebrated Back to Bass world tour, and will soon embark on a tour throughout
North America and Europe this summer.
Download "Deep in the Meadow (Lullaby)" by Sting on Tuesday March 27th.
About THE HUNGER GAMES
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the Capitol of the
nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and
girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising
and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally
televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one
survivor remains.
Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers in her younger sister’s place to
enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the
mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy when she’s pitted against
highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives. If
she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices
in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and
Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in
tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first
in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 26 million copies in print in
the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent
more than 180 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The
New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has
also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.
Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES on March 23, 2012.

on new Starbuck CD Last year, artists
like Madonna, Sheryl Crow and Jennifer Lopez donated songs to Every Mother
Counts, a charity album organized by model and filmmaker Christy Turlington.
Now, Rolling Stone reports that Turlington has lined up another list of
famous pals for a second volume, which will benefit her charitable
foundation, also called Every Mother Counts. They include Seal, Faith Hill,
Sting, Bono, Coldplay, Sade and Paul Simon.
The charity works to reduce the
global maternal mortality rate; because every 90 seconds, a woman dies from
pregnancy complications, and 90 percent of those deaths are preventable.
Available exclusively at Starbucks from May 1 to May 29 -- just in time for
Mother's Day -- Every Mother Counts Vol. 2 features 19 tracks, 15 of which are
previously unheard. Some of those unheard tracks are acoustic or live versions
of well-known songs.
The first album featured only female artists who were mothers, but Turlington
tells Rolling Stone that when she decided to include men this time, Bono and
Chris Martin of Coldplay were obvious choices because "they are both fathers to
daughters." She adds, "I generally wanted a diverse group of artists who were
parents, or...who will be soon."
Here's the track listing, according to Rolling Stone:
Bono and the Edge "Original of the Species" (acoustic) *
Eddie Vedder " Skipping" *
Paul Simon and Edie Brickell "Pretty Day" *
Faith Hill "Wish for You"
Sade "The Sweetest Gift"
Lauryn Hill "I Remember"
Rita Wilson "Baby I'm Yours" *
Diana Krall "Don't Fence Me In" *
Seal "Secret"
Dave Matthews Band "Sister" (live) *
Sting "Fragilidad"
Alanis Morissette "Magical Child" *
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros "Mother" *
David Bowie "Everyone Says 'Hi'"
Cedella Marley "Get Up Stand Up" *
Beck "Corrina, Corrina" *
Rufus Wainwright "Instead of the Dead" *
Patti Smith "Somalia" *
Coldplay "Yellow" (acoustic) *

and Gap Daemon Sting and Gap Daemon Help Get an Englishman to New
York for an Innovative Education Programme Using Apple iPads
Gap Daemon and Sting have teamed up to sponsor an innovative new approach to
teaching music in schools through the use of Apple iPads.
London, UK (PRWEB) March 01,
2012
Neil Johnston, founder of Store Van Music, is an educational entrepreneur and is
living evidence that private investment in education can generate positive
benefits for students. Neil first began using Apple’s technology in teaching
eighteen months ago and this led to a dedicated series of music lessons using
the iPad. The result was an instant success (and You Tube hit), engaging
students in an exciting new medium that was compelling and instantly gratifying
and effective.
However Neil’s plans to take this format to a wider audience in the USA were
suffering from a myopic view by potential investors until [url=Sting and Gap

Using Apple iPads
Gap Daemon and Sting have teamed up to sponsor an innovative new approach to
teaching music in schools through the use of Apple iPads. ]Gap Daemon and
Sting[/url] stepped in. Their joint sponsorship has ensured this innovative tour
of schools from LA to New York can go ahead, and thousands of teenage students
will now be able to benefit first hand from Neil’s innovative approach to
teaching.
James Capon, founding partner and CEO at Gap Daemon explains,
“Neil’s vision of integrating new technology with education mirrors our approach
to enabling students to use technology and our social network to enhance their
travel experience. Having seen Neil’s work in action we recognized that he was
teaching students in a powerful new way, and when he shared his vision for a USA
tour, we wanted to help and support his journey.”
Speaking about the sponsorship Neil said,
“I have been lucky enough to benefit from investment by The Princes Trust, in
the past, and now thanks to Gap Daemon teaming up with Sting I have been able to
realise our ambition of touring Senior schools in the USA teaching and
performing music using Apple iPads. We have seen first hand how technology can
really help students learn and we very quickly get some amazing results. Now
thanks to Gap Daemon people will be able to follow my journey and connect with
us through http://www.gapdaemon.com.”
Sting expressed his view on Store Van Music and their work,
“I’m impressed with Store Van Music’s efforts...their use of studio as classroom
and technology as teacher is exactly what we need to maintain music lessons as a
vital part of the curriculum.”
The tour across USA takes place for 3 weeks from the 27th February, and takes in
cities like San Francisco, Missouri, and New York. During the tour Neil will be
teaching using iPads and garage band, as well as integrating traditional
instrumentation.

02.03.12 Lahti
Symphony Orchestra : Sting Concert On January 10, in Lahti, Sibelius Hal, Finland,
The Lahty Symphony Orchestra covered a full Sting show, in a classic way.
About the Sting concert
Sting is one of the most interesting musical phenomena to have emerged in the
past few decades.
Skipper of the British rock band The Police before getting launched on his solo
career, he has more or less steered clear of all the classifications and formats
of the pop/rock industry and met with almost unprecedented success. He has, in
the course of his recording career, looked to jazz, classical, gospel and many
other genres for ideas, and his lyrics have ranged from human relations to
social issues. His music is insightful and richly nuanced and his texts are
often pure poetry. The cultured and the profound go hand in hand with
readily-accessible melodies and pop aesthetics.
In his bands, singer-bassist Sting has always valued the highest musical
excellence. When my friend Hannu Lepola suggested today’s concert, he had an
interesting approach in mind: we assembled a five-piece band and started playing
Sting. Together we sought ideas for our own versions, made a
close study of many of Sting’s numbers, and even did a few gigs. Today, the same
guys are here on stage with the orchestra, and the basic premises behind our
arrangements are clearly audible in many of the pieces, despite the much bigger
line-up. This is, therefore, very much a musicianoriented project and
excellently suited to the music of Sting.
Considering the background, the music of Sting clearly lends itself to
performance by an orchestra, and making the arrangements was rewarding. I have
used a slightly smaller orchestra than in some of our previous theme
productions, and I’ve also varied the instruments quite a lot from one piece to
another, as dictated by the piece. I have tried to respect Sting’s stylistic
concepts while still taking certain liberties in the arrangements.
The joint contribution of the Lahti, Oulu and Kuopio Symphony Orchestras has
allowed us to make Hannu’s idea reality and for this we are truly grateful. Jaakko Kuusisto

15.02.12 Rock
star Sting A Mystery Meteorite
From the House of Sting
When the English musician Sting and his wife Trudie Styler bought the Lake
House estate in the United Kingdom's rural Wiltshire in the early 1990s,
they got a lot for their money: A beautiful 16th century home and 26
hectares of land on the River Avon, just a stone's throw from Stonehenge.
The house has been featured in
Architectural Digest, and Styler was inspired by the idyllic farm setting to
write The Lake House Cookbook.
But there's one thing Sting and Trudie didn't get when they moved in: a 93
kilogram meteorite that had sat near the front door for at least 80 years. Just
before the sale, the Bailey family (descendants of a noted lieutenant-colonel in
the Royal Artillery and his aristocrat wife), from whom Sting bought the house,
loaned the meteorite to the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London, where it sat
in storage for most of the past 2 decades. But between now and 30 March, the
meteorite is on display at the Royal Society in London, thanks to the efforts of
a meteorite expert who has recently been studying it. And this fall, it will go
on display at Wiltshire's Salisbury Museum, where many of the artifacts found at
Stonehenge are now housed and where thousands of visitors flock each year.
When the meteorite landed, some 30,000 years ago, in what would later become
Sting's front yard, it traveled directly from outer space. But for the last 20
years, it has been moved from place to place, entirely out of public view. Colin
Pillinger, a planetary scientist at the Open University in Milton Keynes, U.K.,
and curator of the Royal Society exhibit, explains that NHM meteorite curators
were skeptical about the rock's importance and where it had originally come
from. They eventually put it in a storehouse some miles from the museum. There
it languored, Pillinger says, "unloved and forgotten," until about 2 years ago.
But then, Pillinger and his colleagues, while studying a much smaller meteorite
found in the 1970s at Danebury hill fort in Hampshire County—about 20 kilometers
from Lake House—began wondering if the two meteorites were part of the same
original object. So they hauled the Lake House meteorite out of storage and
began studying it. It turned out that the two objects were chemically different,
but both rocks, which were apparently preserved intact by the glaciers that once
covered Britain, could provide important information about the region's ice age
history and the nature of its inanimate visitors from space, Pillinger says.
And now the Lake House meteorite will be kept from public eyes no longer. Adrian
Green, director of the Salisbury Museum where the meteorite will go on display,
says that the details are still being worked out with its owners, the Bailey
family, but that the huge rock should be there for a "long-term loan."
Meanwhile, if you are in London anytime between now and 30 March, you can see
the two meteorites—plus a piece of Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree that was taken
into space by a British astronaut in 2010—in the Royal Society's Objects in
Space exhibit.

03.02.12 Amnesty
volunteers on Sting's tour We're delighted that Sting’s “Back To Bass” tour
in early 2012 will provide a platform for Amnesty International to raise
awareness on our campaign against oil pollution and human rights abuse in
the Niger Delta region in Nigeria.
For more than two decades, Sting has been a proud supporter of Amnesty
International and our work to promote human rights worldwide. This
longstanding relationship continues today, as Amnesty volunteers will
organise information booths, highlighting the Clean Up the Niger Delta
campaign, at venues along his 2012 “Back to Bass” tour.
The tour, which received very
positive reviews across North America last year, extends throughout Europe, the
UK and South Africa beginning February 5, 2012 with a sold-out concert in
Newcastle, UK. Please visit www.sting.com/tour for complete itinerary and
ticketing information.
Sting’s support for Amnesty International began in 1981, when he performed at
“The Secret Policemen’s Other Ball” benefit concert in London. Over the years,
he has participated in several concert events, tours, and album recordings. Most
recently, he recorded a version of Bob Dylan’s “Girl From The North Country” for
the compilation Chimes Of Freedom: The Songs Of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of
Amnesty International, released in support of Amnesty’s human rights work.
This year, Amnesty volunteers along the “Back to Bass” tour will offer
literature to concertgoers on behalf of our “Shell: Own Up, Pay Up, Clean Up”
petition, calling on Shell to pay an initial amount of $1billion (£645m) to
establish a clean-up fund for the Niger Delta and start clean-up and
compensation for the affected communities. The campaign is also calling for
Shell and other multinational oil companies operating in the Delta to pay for a
comprehensive assessment of the oil pollution in the whole of the area. A recent
report from the United Nations Environment Programme exposed severe oil
contamination in the Niger Delta – one of Africa’s most bio-diverse regions.

06.01.12 ElbtonalPercussion
“plays Stewart Copeland” The sixth album of the Hamburg drum ensemble
ElbtonalPercussion pays tribute to the music of one of the world's most
influential drummers, and it is at the same time a journey of discovery into
rhythm and sound.
To be released on february 24th.
Stay tuned on LiSting for a contest !
At the end of the 1970s Stewart
Copeland, Andy Summers and Sting developed their very own version of Jamaican
reggae. Choosing to call themselves The Police of all things (!), they went on
to compose several dozen pop hits which melded Caribbean offbeats with the
nervous energy of suburban punk. The result was, as they realised themselves,
white reggae or, in Esperanto: Regatta de blanc. The rest is history, and
history went on to give them one highly success pop career and two careers
dedicated more to artistic integrity than visibility. The musicians of
ElbtonalPercussion have created a musical, tonal monument to one of these
careers.
Stewart Copeland was the conceptual father of The Police and, until the band
split, he was their rhythmic architect. His beats floated freely above the
backbeat, freer than was customary in rock music (possibly due to the fact that
he learned to play the drums in the Middle East, where the Copeland family lived
when he was a child and teenager). It was also largely due to Copeland that the
band deciphered the Jamaican one drop, bringing it to thousands of dancers who
had never previously heard the name Bob Marley, let alone knew where the "one"
was in his riddims.
Copeland's musical life after The Police began with the proverbial thunderbolt:
while working on the final Police album, Synchronicity, Copeland recorded the
soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola's film Rumble Fish, a furious thunderstorm
of drums that created an atmosphere of almost painful tension - abstract
rock'n'roll with no guitar or bass. The soundtrack won him a Golden Globe
nomination and he went on to collaborate on several fascinating film projects:
from Oliver Stone's Wall Street to 9 1/2 Weeks and Highlander. In between he
found bass sparring partners for a diverse range of band projects, including
Animal Logic (with Stanley Clarke) or Oysterhead (with Les Claypool / Primus).
Of all the solo albums which Copeland recorded released - initially under the
modest name Klark Kent – one stands out in particular: The Rhythmatist, a
documentation of his voyage of pilgrimage through Africa, an album that stands
at the top of its world/fusion class along with Eno/Byrne's My Life In The Bush
Of Ghosts and Peter Gabriel's Last Temptation of Christ. Like Eno and Gabriel
(on whose album So he played a small, but important part) Copeland also became
interested in the possibilities of digital sound synthesis, and the combination
of percussion and electronic sounds runs through his work like a leitmotif.
All this makes his work ideally suited to be embraced and interpreted by the
musicians of ElbtonalPercussion. The band was founded almost a decade ago by
four drummers - true rhythmatists who brought their individual biographic
backgrounds in film music, pop production, teaching and - naturally - drumming
into this joint project. In Elbtonal drums play the leading role; a division of
labour that is perfectly natural in other cultures, but which is the exception
here, apart from New Music. All other instruments are featured as supporting
instruments or explicitly as guest instruments. In fact, ElbtonalPercussion are
dedicated team workers, both within and outside the percussive section. The band
has, for instance, cooperated with design icon Peter Schmidt, John Neumeier's
Hamburg Ballet, the organist and composer Claus Bantzer, marimba virtuoso Keiko
Abe, trumpeter Matthias Höfs, spoken word artist Christian Brückner and
percussionist Trilok Gurtu. On their album Four Elements (ACT) listeners will
find string ensemble G-String, the singer Helga Pappert (Moonbootica), and guest
vibraphone player Christopher Dell. It is also quite audible that all four
musicians - like Stewart Copeland himself - love exploring electronic sounds and
love using this constantly evolving technology in subtle ways in their pieces.
But however fascinating this specific field, their main focus remains drums and
percussion: the band uses around 150 different drums live and in the studio,
ranging from African hand drums to giant Japanese drums.
To date, ElbtonalPercussion has released two albums on the jazz label ACT and
two on Arte Nova Classics, as well as a thrilling live CD/DVD In Concert and the
band have collaborated on several soundtracks, including Doris Dörrie's Drama
Kirschblüten-Hanami, the Baader-Meinhof-Komplex by Bernd Eichinger and Christian
Alvard's science-fiction thriller Pandorum. In addition to these collaborations,
the band has been invited to perform at countless international festivals
(including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, JazzBaltica & NCPA Percussion
Festival Peking).
Following ElbtonalPercussion's highly acclaimed collaboration with Stewart
Copeland for the spectacular live show Ben Hur, the band has devoted their sixth
album, ElbtonalPercussion plays Stewart Copeland, in its entirety to the man and
his music. the four musicians have chosen a representative selection of
Copeland's different works and periods as the source of inspiration for the
pieces featured on this album; the tracks range from rhythmically complex Police
hits, such as Contact, to his soundtrack compositions for Wall Street and Rumble
Fish, from the Rhythmatist album to the compositions for ensemble musicians
featured on Orchestralli. The songs Dog Dreams and Dance Ants were specially
written by Stewart Copeland for ElbtonalPercussion and were premiered at the
Tromp-Percussion Festival in Eindhoven. The ensemble's expressive spectrum
ranges from thumping, driving, floor-friendly numbers (Tulsa Tango, The Mud
Lions) to the most delicate sound collages (Wallstret, Regret). And in every
single piece the drums - with their incredible colours and facet, act as the
beating heart of the music.
An exciting project that sits squarely between orchestral and popular music!
"The excellent ElbtonalPercussion has completed an album of their arrangements
of my material. It’s fairly obscure soundtrack stuff and it’s pretty cool - I’m
really enjoying this! These tracks are terrific." Stewart Copeland (DRUMMER
Magazine 2011)

30.12.11 JeWelste
coverband jeWelste is a pop/rock coverband from the
Netherlands. They play all kinds of gigs (company parties, student parties,
in bars, weddings, etc.), but mainly at festivals. In the Netherlands they
are kind of well-known. They play covers of pop/rock acts from the
70s/80s/90s, but also cover recent songs/artists. Sometimes the band just
performs the songs as they are, but they also make their own versions of
some songs. This year, jeWelste recorded their own versions of:
They also recorded a great version of Sting's "They
Dance Alone" for a charity event called Serious Request. Every year three
well-known radio DJs lock themselves in a "glass house" for a week (18 dec - 24
dec). They don't eat and make live radio for 7 days / 24 hours a week. They try
to raise as much money as possible for a good cause. This year the cause was
"mothers in situations of war". The money is used to help mothers that have
become victims of a war by losing their husbands and/or children.
This whole Serious Request is a very well-known event with millions of listeners
the whole week. Everybody can do something to raise money for this cause. So
jeWelste created a version of "They
Dance Alone", because they thougt the theme of this song was so similar to
the theme of the event. The band pressed singles with this version of "They
Dance Alone" on it (+ our recording of Queen's "I Want It All) and sold those
for € 5,- (everybody could and still can buy the single at
seriousrequest.jewelste.nl). Together with a school in The Hague they sold about
800 copies and raised almost 4000 euros for the cause. jeWelste became the band
that raised the most money and got some airplay at 3FM (the radio station behind
Serious Request). The whole event raised 8.6 million euros.
The band is recording "Every little thing she does is magic" for a CD that will
be released sometime in 2012. I will let you know when they release this
recording.

Issue bags. The bags are 100 per cent recycled and made from elephant dung.
The children at Karm Marg have
created their own label for the bags: 'Jugaad', which means ‘something made from
nothing’. Jugaad gives the children a chance to be creative, learn new skills

who live on subsistence smallholdings and rely on this employment.

09.12.11 Sting -
Christmas party show Prague - British singer and composer Sting will
perform at the Christmas party of the PPF financial group that belongs to
Petr Kellner, the richest Czech, on December 16, PPF sources who requested
anonymity have told CTK.
Sting has had six concerts in the Czech Republic, most recently in Prague in
the summer 2010.
The party is to be held at Prague Castle, the seat of Czech heads of state.
"It is true
that this year's Christmas party for the staff will be different than in the
previous year since PPF is celebrating 20 years of its existence," PPF
spokesman Alexej Bechtin has told CTK.
"This will correspond with the choice of the invited artists. However, it is
still a surprise who will perform at the party," Bechtin said.
This will not be Sting's first performance of this type.
A few years ago, a rich Russian man paid one million dollars for his private
concert in Russia.
However, the performance of such a pop star at a private party is far from
usual in the Czech Republic.
His next Prague concert, scheduled for February 18, 2012, is absolutely sold
out.
PPF is a leading international financial and investment group in Central and
Eastern Europe. With a 94.25-percent stake, Kellner is the principal
shareholder of the group.
The bank's members are firms active in banking, insurance, energy sector,
precious metal extraction, property and retail business. The group operates
in Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS) countries and in Asia.

29.11.11 Sting
Announced As Patron Of The Sage Gateshead's 'Arches Project'. The Sage Gateshead are delighted to announce Sting
as a founding Patron of their ambitious £1.3 million project to transform
the remaining railway arches behind the iconic venue into a hub of creative
training for some of the region's most disadvantaged and vulnerable young
people.
An appeal to raise funds for The
Arches project was launched at The Sage Gateshead's Annual General Meeting
(TUES).
Lord Puttnam of Queensgate, Chair of The Sage Gateshead, said: "We are delighted
to have been able to make this announcement at our AGM, which falls just days
before our seventh birthday.
"Sting has always been a great friend to this organisation so for him to cement
his support by becoming Patron of this hugely important project is a milestone
for The Sage Gateshead and greatly appreciated by all the people connected to
it."
Sting, who will return to the venue with his Back To Bass Tour in February,
added: "Having grown up on Tyneside, I'm pleased to support this appeal for The
Arches project and The Sage Gateshead's ongoing commitment to creating
opportunities for today's young musicians and music lovers in the North East.''
The Sage Gateshead's Foundation Learning programme, which offers young people
aged 16 to 18 the opportunity to develop their social and employability skills
alongside a unique urban music training programme, is currently based in
temporary buildings in the arches with additional sessions taking place in the
Music Education Centre in the building. But the programme is currently operating
at ten times the scale originally envisaged. The plan is to create a
purpose-built training centre offering classroom, production, presentation and
rehearsal spaces including a studio for urban street art projects.
Anthony Sargent, General Director at The Sage Gateshead, said: "The greater the
region's economic challenges become, the more work we're doing with these young
people – many of whom for a variety of reasons exist on the outer edges of
society. With this exciting new redevelopment project we will be able to
continue to help them rebuild their lives and learn musical and life skills that
for many of them are transforming their employability and their life chances.
"The Arches offer a complementary series of spaces to those within the main
building giving the young people a space which is 'theirs', where they feel
comfortable and accepted, something which is crucial to successful working with
these groups."
The plans are being developed by the architect Jason Flanagan who was primarily
responsible for The Sage Gateshead building with Foster and Partners. He now
runs his own architectural practice.

acclaimed bassist perform 13 unique duets with an array of stars from the
pop, jazz and world music scenes, including Sting, Angélique Kidjo and Dee
Dee Bridgewater plus jazz stars Chick Corea, George Duke, Hank Jones and Roy
Hargrove, amongst others.
The 39-year-old maestro places
himself in the forefront on a duet apiece with "13 of my closest musical friends
and cohorts" - singers Angélique Kidjo, Sting and Dee Dee Bridgewater; pianists
George Duke, Eddie Palmieri and Chick Corea, as well as Dr. Billy Taylor and
Hank Jones (who both passed away in 2010); violinist Regina Carter; trumpeter
Roy Hargrove; guitarist Russell Malone; tenor saxophonist Ron Blake; and actress
Gina Gershon. In the process, McBride unleashes the full measure of his already
legendary skills, crafting as complete a portrait of his diverse interests -
different variations of the blues and African-American church experience, bebop,
